On Tuesday , the 20 th of February 2007 , in the art space of Astrolavos artlife (Herodotou 11, Kolonaki, tel: 210 7221 200, 4, fax: 210 7221 304, www.astrolavos.gr, opening hours: Mon. Wed. Sat. 11.00 - 15.00, Tu. Th. Fr. 11.00 - 20.30, opens the personal exhibition of artifacts by Giannis Zagorianakos.
The artist uses a seemingly inexpensive, colorless material - lead - which he transforms by covering it with colors and the chemical reactions. The two-dimentional leaves of the metal are cut in different shapes/ forms, afterwards break and colored.
With this, somewhat inexpensive material, starts something unexpected; a journey in pictures. A childlike and magical world comes alive through the artists unique - naive painting idiom.
Little bit of alchemy, of fantasy, acrylic colors and enamel and watercolor are combined with chemical reactions of sulphuric acid and ammonia creating painted images upon the metal. Chemistry and painting seem to work well together.
Images of musicians, dancers, unique animals spread like a colorful maypole amongst small towns reminding us the orient, while amongst them circulate colored beetles that are embodied in a magical game and make the viewer be part of a journey in the world of fantasy and fairytale.
The 'pop' painting idiom of G. Zagorianakos brings out a hot, Mediterranean sense which pours from the warm color palette which the artist appropriates; the soft, prone to curves, outlines define the shape of the artworks/ manufactures.
In conclusion, the sense of far east and the magical sets with which these artifacts are connected and enlisted into the memory of lots of us, emerges artfully; clearly reporting modern mans need to break away from the rambling sceneries and the stressful, fast paces of the big city. And maybe then he/ she can be taken to humane, quieter and more hospitable places.
Duration of exhibition : Saturday 10th of March
