On Tuesday the 23rd of May, in the art space of ASTROLAVOS
artlife opens a double exhibition with artifacts and jewelry
by Julia Carasso and painting works by Giannis Spyropoulos.
Carassos’ main material is aluminum wire gauze, in its natural
silver color or tinted with warm and cool colors and gold
leafs, highlighting through transparencies and airy, supple
materials the different textures of the chosen motives.
Her subject matters, simple- of everyday life - inspired
mainly by nature, constitute large units; like the unit
of "Flowers" which decorate necklaces, bracelets,
rings and earrings. Following, is the unit of "‘Snakes",
which can be transformed into belts, necklaces or bracelets
and a smaller unit, the one with the broaches entitled,
"Hearts".
Carassos other jewelry are made with simple, light, geometric
lines. The artist playing like a child creates accelerating
folds with wire, paints it; emphasizing on multicolored
patterns.
In her larger artifacts the artist uses geometry and Doric
shapes, reorganizing metal elements (engine parts) recomposing
them with her own manufactures and combining them with glass.
The main units are the "Boats" and the "Lights".
In both these units, artifacts are combined with postmodern/
industrial elements from ready-mades in a simple design
while several elements refer to childhood age; like the
transparent glass beads glistening under the light. In general,
Carassos artistic manufactures and her jewelry are indirectly
connected- metaphorically through the elements/ symbols-
which are consisted of, with nature but also with humans’
basic, internal needs.
The painting exhibition which is presented at the same time
in «ASTROLAVOS» artlife is with oil canvasses, drawings
and watercolors by Giannis Spyropoulos (1912- 1990). The
works presented by this internationally renowned Greek artist
are from different periods of his work.
Scenery drawings from the first period of his work (before
1960), where the Hellenic, mainly islandic scenery, prevails
on the artists canvasses and approaching in a totally personal
style thus transcending the absolute, naturalistic truth
and going together with the first modernists of the 20 th
Century, like P. Cezanne. In these works, celebrated and
appreciated by art lovers and historians, for they are rare,
it is interesting to study the deconstruction and re-synthesis
of the scenery’s different layers and the internal rhythm
which run through space. At the same time are exhibited
oil canvasses and mixed medium works by the last, better
known units, when he had totally joined the movement of
Surrealism. In the specific canvasses, with the dark brown
colors, earthy highlights, dominating the canvass golden
shades and thin- vague color; the main interest lies in
the realization of the stability of the under color, which
is skillfully lighted only by individual geometrical shapes-
circles or straight lines- in vivid, warm colors attributing
symbolic tensions to the art work.
Giannis Spyropoulos was given an award in the 1960 Venice
Biennale and is one of the few Greek artists who had an
international career and painting works were recognized
in an international level.
Duration of exhibition: 23d of May until 10th of June.
