The art and artistic preparation of collage, as a handicraft begins from ancient times and appears in a lot of civilizations; yet, it is considered to be part of the history of Art since only 1912. This date is a landmark for according to all indication it was in 1912 that Braque and Picasso used collage in their cubistic paintings.

Collage is the technique of 'pasting' of different outer-painting materials (cloth, paper, carton, buttons, cords, etc) on the two-dimensional painting surface while the pasting of papers is called papier colle. By these techniques later on emerged the technique of photo-montage (photograph pasting of different sources and origination), mixed medium technique (different colors enclosing objects), decollage (pasting of papers on the painted surface and tearing) and many more, not only in painting but also in sculpture and installation work.

In Greece appear shyly during the 30's some efforts by Angelos Spachis and Odysseas Elytis, however only during the movement of Abstraction in 1950's-60's did collage 'gained' its own space within the art of painting. The organizers of the present exhibition aspire to include works of art, manufactures and installation showing the historical-chronological course of collage in Greece through specific artists and artistic movements.
Purpose of the exhibition is the study of not only a purely technical issue and its tracing in different chronological periods but mainly the heritage left behind so much in painting as in various other artistic categories and its transformation in object and space.
