On Tuesday 6 th of May in the art-shop of 'Astrolavos - artlife' (Irodotou 11, Kolonaki, tel: 210 7221200, 4, fax: 210 7221304, opening hours: Mon.Wed. Sat 11.00 - 15.00, Tu. Th. Fr. 11.00-20.30, www.astrolavos.gr), opens the new individual exhibition by Nansy Sousoula entitled: 'Fragmented Memory' .
Wall-mounted works of mixed technique, artifacts and artistic jewelry; images of a fragmented world there where representation mixes with abstraction. Indefinite figures embodied in simple or complicated abstract compositions, creating games and dialogue with abstract expressionism and geometry.
Under toned yellow backgrounds, polyester surfaces on which the artist chooses to work in this unit, get a new essence, plainly built with charcoal and light in the back of the box, thus creating different transparencies, reflections and senses.
Her works again in canvas combine painting with mixed techniques and collages, materials like pc wires, nylon thread, beads, paper creating painting dimension. The power of the colour transmits positive energy. The antithesis of the sensitive motives with the harsh materials provokes the sight and the interest; the body of work allows multiple readings. The side painting episodes like fragmented memory of spaces and faces jump out with poetic licence through miscellaneous materials. Enigmatic works and for that deeply erotic, without resorting to decorative details or eloquent symbols, bring back memories and myths inviting in a sensual fantastic world.
The exhibition will include the artists' jewerly, who with no stylistic cliches and restrictions creates art that can be worn. Together with the painting creations, one wears the corresponding mood like a smile on the face.
The same period in the gallery space will be exhibited works of Daphne Rokou , entitled: 'Postal Packages 1' . Quite few are these artists who throughout the history of Modern Art, who with thematic axis to the postal letter and postal packages, have created works of art referring to their conceptual meaning.
Daphne Rokou, with her personal style lends elements of surrealism and combines them with post-modern, black and white photographs, creating psychedelic, dramatic prints, similar to snap shots of silent movies. The artist claims: 'The package is the message itself' , something that refers to a Roland Barthes essay from his book 'The empire of the Senses' .
'I heard that four post offices, in Futchen, Okima. Leoud and nearby Partheniou closed forever, exactly the same day and time, without ever being able to give the parcels they had in store. Employees stated that if there was a chance of anything be known, it would circulate by tiny crack-holes that time would create on these buildings, by then all went mysteriously quite.
The parcels condition shows that they have crossed vast distances with all possible transport means. Stories, faces, wishes and suggestions, going from hand to hand, through continents, cities, rivers, keeping trail by all those who held them.
Returning from my first trip I brought back some since I discovered that the doors of the four post offices were never locked.
As far as materials are concerned, the artist uses: photographic parcels tied with strings, seals, stamps, haiku, acrylic colours and most of all Baudelaire's suggestion for trips.
