"The only meaningful color in my work, since always, has been the color red.
Everything else variations at the service of narration, or at the most, unavoidably limited."
Kostas Tsoclis work, even though always highly artistic, had as a driving force and mainframe his ideas, ideals, feelings, obsessions and his very own poetic writing.
On his latest individual exhibition, presented Thursday 10th of January in the art space of " Astrolavos dexameni " (Xanthippou 11, Kolonaki, tel: 210 7294342,3, fax: 210 7293317, www.astrolavos.gr , opening hours: Tu-Fr 10.30-14.00 and 18.00-21.00, Sat 10.30-14.30) the art works exhibited have as a base the color red.
The artist narrates and exhibits via his idiom and artistic speech his social and personal agonies. His choices, which for fifty years still remain consistent, remind us the obsessions, conceptual or/and plastic of renowned artists throughout different ages. Artists, who remained faithful in their 'inner self' no matter how much negative criticism they suffered.
An artist can express himself consciously or unconsciously with color; his medium and material. In Tsoclis's works, the combination and coalescence of the soft, fictile canvas and color, with the hard, warm wood, the cool metal or the concrete heavy rock, the color simplicity, the form clarity and the poetic-illusionistic essence of his images often seem like he is narrating life-long, unearthly but also humane stories. The above are elements inhered in his painting works and installations or videos, this way transpiring and characterizing the whole of his work, assigning to it the authentic idiom which has to be recognized in the work of an important artist.
Submersible and recognizable through the very depths of his soul, and his up to the present day course, Costas Tsoclis now descends, listens and understands - better than ever- the continuous route of color Red and of Personal Obsessions.
In a series of works based upon the absolute domination of color, Costas Tsoclis expresses thoughts, ideas of the subconscious and conscious world through the color, the line, the design, the material but also the same writing and expression of the deepest personal thoughts and feelings, uncloaking and revealing to the viewer his inner being- not only as an artist but also as a man.
The deposition of soul through works and words is, by no means, an easy creative procedure, especially for someone who is not a poet but a plastic artist. Yet, somehow, Costas Tsoclis always dares to speak his mind.
Thoughts are like trees, their roots spread slowly under the conscious, within the subconscious soil, until they reach the atmosphere and gaze up to the sky. On the other hand, obsessions are like Color Red: persistent, vivid, always present; distinguished, prevailing upon any other color.
Tsoclis never really integrated into any artistic movement and he does not wish to be apart of any specific historic time. The artist claims: "As long as I register present, I have the responsibility of each Today, the way I perceive it of course.'.
Therefore, he walks through time and variety of ideas without rest, exchanges 'handshakes' with relatives he might meet on the way and speaks his farewells devoid of nostalgia, only to continue his lonesome trip, which seems to be a constant departure and arrival to his life and work.
The Belgian art critic Daniele Gillemont writes: " Tsoclis is for certain the most plastic of all contemporary explicit artists, the most realist of all painters-philosophers and no doubt the most charming. All his work is a strong and dramatic battle amongst the two poles: the sometimes oppressive and humiliating reality and the other one, the imaginary and poetic."
